Many homeowners across Alberta have taken the solar plunge and started generating energy for their homes with rooftop solar panels. Of course, while Alberta may be known for its clear, sunny skies, it is also known for its winters and snowfall.
During the wintertime in Edmonton, our roofers at A. Clark Roofing & Siding receive many questions about whether it is necessary to remove snow from a solar array.
Snow cover can sometimes reduce solar panel efficiency, so clearing snow may occasionally be needed. That being said, you should always prioritize safety and refrain from climbing up on your roof in slippery, snowy conditions. Thankfully, there are other effective ways to clear the snow, including:
Letting gravity and sunlight do the work
The way that solar panels are designed and installed generally makes it easy for snow to simply slide off. A south- or near south-facing orientation means that sunlight will warm up the snow and cause it to melt a little. A typical solar array pitch will then make it easy for gravity to pull the snow down without you needing to do any work.
Using a telescopic squeegee or roof rake
If the snow isn’t sliding off your solar panels on its own, then you can try to remove it manually using a telescopic squeegee or a telescopic roof rake with a rubber head (so as not to damage the panels). It’s best to stand on the ground rather than on a ladder, if possible. Once you knock away some snow from the edge of your roof, the rest of the snow might simply come sliding down as well.
Prevent Snow and Ice Buildup with Proper Roof Winterization
If your roof isn’t properly prepared for the winter season, you may have more issues with snow and ice buildup. Snow and ice buildup can, in turn, cause roof leaks and damage to your solar panels.
