Asphalt shingles prices, affordable roofing material

Asphalt shingles are the most affordable shingles. Asphalt shingles also range into more high-end products that last longer and have higher impact resistance, but mostly they still tend to be more economical than other roofing materials, like cedar, metal, or tile.

Roof deck and preparation

With asphalt shingles, you want to make sure you have the proper roof system in place to protect your property. Whether we are installing a new roof or removing older material, a good roof starts with a clean, well-structured roof deck. Roof decks can consist of plywood, OSB, or board decking. Some things that we look for are roof rot, the strength of the decking, and spacing between boards.

Eave protection and underlayment

All asphalt shingle manufacturers recommend having felt installed to the roof deck before shingles are installed, and building codes require eave protection up to a certain distance past your exterior walls. Valley protection is also a code requirement. These are important considerations as poor quality or non-adhering eave protection can allow for water to enter the home, or at the least saturate the roof deck if a problem arises with ice-damming or heavy snow build up.

Standard eave flashings (also known as drip edges) only usually focus on solving one or two problems that can occur at the eaves and sometimes they don’t even do that well. To combat this, A. Clark offers specific eave flashings that are strong enough to support the eave overhangs, come prefinished to blend in with the aesthetics, and guide water away from the roof edge and into the eavestroughs. In combination with adhesive eave protection, the bottom edges of your roof are protected from early ageing, and from any weather conditions that Alberta can throw at your home or property while looking great.

Asphalt shingle installation

While there are different wind ratings with asphalt shingles depending on the installation, we forego the lesser options and aim for the best by storm nailing all asphalt roof installs. This gives our customers the best wind resistance at no extra cost.

When we are replacing your asphalt roofing shingles, we check the condition of your flashings. It may be worth considering replacement, if not to improve the function, then at least to improve the look. New roof flashings are consistently installed, pre-finished metal flashings with proper diverters, cuts and bends at corners, transitions and eaves. We will also be replacing all of your vents with new options that will last the life span of the roof or longer and meet your venting needs.

All of our asphalt shingle installs are done with the competence and care to handle Alberta’s harsh weather conditions. Our team of professional asphalt roofers work safely and show consideration for your property and the environment around it. After all the work is complete, we follow up with our quality management to ensure we have given you a quality asphalt shingle roof.

Asphalt shingles FAQ's

What is the lifespan of asphalt shingles?

A low cost roofing system you can expect 25-30 years of protection after installation on a typical roof.  Easy to repair/replace, asphalt/fibreglass shingles are a flexible choice.  Many colour options are available as well as different shingle profiles offering a customizable protection from a basic package to heavy duty.

Can asphalt shingles be customized?

Asphalt shingles remain homeowners’ most popular roofing option. Shingles combine great value with solid performance and can be customized to give a defined look, for example, through a high profile ridge cap.  They also come in varying thickness and can earn a Class 4 impact rating against hail damage—a rating more and more insurance companies are acknowledging as the highest tier protection for a roof.

How quickly do asphalt shingles degrade?

While they are popular, they tend to degrade more quickly than other roofing material options. After a few years, weather conditions can wear them out, hail might damage them, and winds may rip them off.  If you collect run off your roof for use in a garden etc., granule loss from the asphalt may contaminate the water.  Shingles generally hug the contours of the roof deck, but may need some time to settle into place after install.  Architectural controls occasionally prohibit the use of shingles in a subdivision—always check to ensure you are familiar with your area before making your choice!
